Technology has given rise to the discovery of new, data-rich sources of information that have enabled investors to find new sources of alpha in their research. These data sources, generally known as “alternative data”, have expanded the horizons of traditional sell-side and independent research companies. Examples of alternative data include credit card data, app traffic data, and web data, and all aim to provide some incremental information or “edge” in the investment research process.
Over the course of this webinar, Steve Pulec and Ryan Sullivan from YipitData will explain that, in recent years, web data has emerged as one of the most valuable alternative data sources. Web data are publically available facts on company or government web sites that, when analysed in aggregate, can provide granular insights into fundamental company performance within very short frequencies. This data source has become a popular research tool for some of the top institutional investors around the world, providing some of the most accurate estimates on company performance.
Steve Pulec is the CTO At YipitData, where he oversees technology and the team of 20 engineers that aggregate web data for institutional investors.
Steve has been writing code to collect data from the web for over ten years and applying those skills to the alternative data space for the past six years. Along with the collection of web data, he specialises in cloud computing and infrastructure management. He has created open source software projects that are used by Google, CERN, gov.uk, Mozilla, Dropbox, and Spotify.
Steve holds a BS in computer science and applied mathematics from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
