There is an increasing focus on value for money in the investment industry. In the UK and elsewhere, regulators and government have challenged financial services firms to demonstrate how they are delivering value to clients.
CFA UK's Value for Money Working Group have authored a report that notes a lack of common understanding around VFM is inhibiting clarity and transparency. It calls for a clearer taxonomy around VFM and proposes a model framework for assessment that is designed to work for all funds with three main elements:
- Costs and charges
- Output, defined as risk and return
- Quality and service
Lastly, the report emphasises the importance for asset managers of putting their client in central view. Each client has different needs and views of the value they wish to receive for their money. These can only be uncovered and targeted through an early and ongoing dialogue.
